What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I loved how I got to experience the study of Art in a new culture. Aboriginal art and culture were fascinating. I love living in new cultures. I broadened my horizons even more, and gained a lot of independence and personal growth.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was not too difficult. I only took 4 courses in my one semester of Study Abroad. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to take Art classes in a different culture and environment. It was a more liberal, creative, diverse setting than my American university. I took lower level courses, however, the competition was more cut-throat, being at a larger host university than my home one. The grading system was different and it was more challenging to receive high grades.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Being such a large city and university with so many study abroad students, it was difficult for my host country to meet all my needs or deal with me on a very personal level. However, I did not have much need for their assistance, so my expectations were met. One disadvantage for me, was that I was taking courses at the Art campus, situated a good distance from the Main Campus housing the Study Abroad Offices.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

When I arrived, the housing situation was in poor condition. Many maintenance jobs were required in the apartment, and the previous tenants had abused the property. However, with the help of the Study Abroad Program and a very sweet local handy-man, I was able to make the necessary adjustments. The neighbourhood was ideal, being just a short walk to the beach and other services.

* Food:

I provided my own food, as I lived in an off-campus apartment. I lived in an expensive area for grocery shopping and dining. However, a good size mall with reasonable prices was only a short bus ride away at Bondi Junction.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I lived with some rowdy American students. I would have preferred living with international students, but I was still able to build some friendships. I loved visiting New Zealand on my school holiday, as well as joining some short weekend excursions to nearby attractions.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I had health insurance while there, and knew that I could call the Study Abroad Office for assistance whenever I needed. I did not have any health issues or concerns while there. It was good that I lived with others and made local friends in my neighbourhood, in case anything were to happen. Australia is a clean, safe and healthy environment. I did not fear for my safety or health while living there. It is a well-developed nation with many services.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
