The Intern Group: Tokyo Internship Placement Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have developed skills which could be useful for my future employment, as well as built up my confidence and enriched my travel experience by learning about a culture and getting to see interesting places.

Review Your Program

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The destination was great and unique. Tokyo is a very interesting place to visit and work. I highly recommend.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Life is expensive in Tokyo. I had some savings although I have spent a lot on personal expenses, such as travelling and entry for various tourist attractions.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Work a lot before you go to save some money, for example during university breaks.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Internship
  • People
  • Japan itself
* What could be improved?
  • To lessen the cost of this program as you need much money to go on it. People with insufficient funds would not be able to afford it.
  • To include flight cost as I have received an official confirmation of my participation 2 weeks before and flight was really expensive then. Or give a notice of a few months, so the flight would be much cheaper.
  • The program could be more organised in terms of preparations before starting an internship.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? That I would receive a confirmation 2 weeks before, instead of waiting for it and paying £200 more for a flight.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
