The Intern Group: Intern in New York City through The Intern Group

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have gained an understanding of the US legal system, as well as the legal process. This has helped me better understand the legal system in the UK, so is likely to help me get a job back home. The most valuable thing I have gained from this experience, as said previously, is the friendships I have gained. The entire trip has been full of incredible people.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The Intern New York program has allowed me to gain invaluable experience in a law firm in New York City. I have had a wide variety of tasks, and developed a wide range of skills, which have challenged me and helped me develop.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The experience coordinator, Brian, has been amazing. He ensures that we are well looked after, integrate into NY life, and also ensures we have a lot of fun!! Generally, the experience has been well coordinated.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I have stayed in 92Y on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The best way to describe the rooms is basic but functional. The location is extremely convenient, with 3 subway stations within 10 minutes walking distance.

* Food:

Food is not included in the Internship program. But it's New York, youre hardly spoiled for choice.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I feel I quickly integrated in to the NYC way of life. In large part thanks to the warm welcome and orientation given by Brian. I quickly got used to the subway, even if I still, after 6 months, occasionally go the wrong way. I have made friends for life thanks to this experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I haven't had to use the healthcare system during my time here.

* Safety:

I have always felt safe in NY. The Upper East Side around 92Y is slightly quieter, and feels very safe. The 24hr security presence at the accommodation is also reassuring.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The Intern Group took most of the stress out of the pre-arrival process. They helped arrange interviews, and helped with the visa process. The Intern New York team instantly made me feel welcome. Thanks to Brian, I quickly felt a part of the intern family. Everyone recognises that we are all in similar positions, being away from home for an extended period of time. Brian also arranges activities, social events, and professional development events for us. These have helped me forge life long friendships with people from all across the world. They have also helped me improve my skills, and become more confident. I have found that since beginning this program I have had more success with job interviews back in the UK.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Be aware that New York is a very expensive city!!! The tipping culture is slightly ridiculous.
