The GREEN Program: Iceland - Sustainability and Renewable Energy Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This program allowed me to learn from industry experts in sustainability. It gave me a motivation to pursue sustainability that I have not received anywhere else in my undergraduate degree. It allowed me to meet people that were like minded and had similar goals, and to work with these same people to develop world changing ideas. It allowed me to focus in on sustainability which is an area that does not get too much attention in my field, and in this way it was the perfect supplement to my university's curriculum. The friendships I made will last lifetimes, and the memories I left with are unforgettable. This program allows you to experience, learn, and do things you would have never imagined in a million years, like snorkeling between tectonic plates or hiking up glaciers.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • I loved the icelandic food
  • I absolutely loved the adventurous spirit of the program- getting to do things people only dream of.
  • I loved that all the learning was experiential and hands on.
* What could be improved?
  • I wish this program was longer than a week.
  • If it was longer it would allow more time for students to bring their capstones into fruition, and for students to have a deeper dive into this subjects.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I only wish I had found out about the financial options with more time in order to assist the other programs (Japan, Peru) as an undergrad.

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
