Texas A&M University: MSC L.T. Jordan Internship and Living Abroad Program (ILAP)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Very much so. The price wasn't absurd and the quality of the program was excellent. The experience itself allowed me to experience London and ALL that it had to offer. I saw SO MANY DIFFERENT types of cultures all in one place. It was a very unique experience.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This was actually an internship that was fairly demanding. Getting credit for the experience very much worth it in the long run, too. The employer was very kind and clear on what he wanted and expected from me. His methods of teaching were direct and did not conflict with what I already knew. The system of work in London was very much different because it was at a much slower pace than that of cities in America, but it was good because it made me seem like an extremely fast worker.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program's strengths included a lot of preparation and things worked out very well in the end. Weaknesses include the level of communication between the program directors as well as the speed of things that were done.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I felt safe with the neighborhood. It was outside the main part of the city, so generally more safe. The aesthetics were very nice, too. Almost all the houses were small and unique in their own way. There was no need to buy settle-in items because I lived with a host family for the time I was there for this program. The host family was awesome. They made the stay very enjoyable.

* Food:

Well, it was somewhat difficult to find anything extremely healthy that wasn't overprice. I guess that should be expected though, especially compared to American food. All the local places on the outsides of the main part of the city were nice. China Town and Brick Lane are good, too.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program provided the chance to go on an expedition to the Stonehenge and then Bath. Everything was really nice with that. Other than that, the program did not provide any specific trips and the group I was with went on our own.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Just be aware of where you are eating and what you are eating. London is very good place to find very diverse types of food. Anything and everything.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
