SUNY Broome: Rome - Study Abroad at American University of Rome

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile, but part of me wishes I had done it alone so I would have been forced to try new things and be out of my comfort zone.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Too much work for being a study abroad. I wanted to take in Europe as much as possible. The teachers wanted you to do well and were always available to talk.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Overall the American University of Rome had a great community feeling to it.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My neighborhood was called Monte Verde vecchio, and it was very nice.

The neighborhood was very family oriented, which made me feel safe. My building and apartment were beautiful, however, the location was a bit out of the way of my school and of the night life. Everything was provided for us within the apartment.

* Food:

Eat in Trastevere or find a little Osteria because the food is bound to be delicious!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

N/A.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Very safe, the staff took care of its students.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? A lot. There is really no way around it.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cabs were expensive. Food adds up, and so does traveling.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced everyday with locals. A lot of people spoke english but i always tried to speak in Italian with them.
