SUNY Binghamton: Nottingham - Exchange & Study Abroad Program at University of Nottingham

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was very worthwhile. I learned so much more about the English culture as well as many other European countries while I traveled. It also made me proud to be an American.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I really disliked having 1 final exam with no work in between. I feel like this lends itself to cramming before the exam and then forgetting everything right after.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had a single room with a sink in the room and shared a bathroom. The dorm rooms were very nice.

It was wonderful. It did get a bit warm at times but having a sink in the room was really nice. Living on campus was a wonderful way to meet locals.

* Food:

Unfortunately the food here is disgusting. There are very rigid schedules and it's pretty much a variation of the same thing every day. The food was probably the worst part of my trip.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I met some wonderful people and had the opportunity to backpack through Europe for a month. You can't get much better than that.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The campus seemed very safe but a lot of people spoke about burglaries so locking doors and windows is a must. There's a health center on campus and hospital right across the street so I always felt safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About 15 GBP going out at night but I ate on campus with the meal plan.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Laundry costs a couple of pounds and that starts to add up. Also, pay as you go cell phones are a bit expensive if yuo use them a lot.
