SUNY Binghamton: Edinburgh - Exchange & Study Abroad Program at University of Edinburgh

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I think it was definitely worthwhile. I took some classes that challenged me in my field of study, which wasn't really the case back home. I met some really amazing people and got to see some truly wonderful things all while learning new things about the culture that was around me every day.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I wouldn't advise future students to take three honours-level courses at the University of Edinburgh like I did. It was a lot of hard work considering I wasn't used to the system and grading styles.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The street behind my flat didn't seem very safe, but I wasn't completely bothered by it because I didn't need to walk down it every day. The whole area wasn't very clean, but I guess that's what to expect when you live in the middle of the city.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I went on several trips with friends, and traveled around Europe a bit during spring break. I have a friend at the University of St Andrews, and we went to London and Belgium together, which was a really awesome time.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never had any medical problems; but if I had, I would have known what to do because of the information I was given upon arrival.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Roughly forty pounds, but it fluctuated a lot, especially if I went on small weekend trips.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Be very very careful with your expenses over spring break; I got stuck in Munich because of the Icelandic volcanic eruption, which affected my finances for the rest of the year. I would say just be prepared in case something like that happens.
