Study Abroad Programs in Costa Rica

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned many new recipes, but mostly I learned about the culture. Costa Rica is the greenest country I have ever been in.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The directors are amazing! Ask them anything and they will provide an answer. Most of them are tour guides and have a rich knowledge of history and culture. They really made the trip fun!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My host family was very accommodating of my needs, though I had very few! My host mother cooked the most amazing meals, and taught me a few recipes!

* Food:

Costa Rican food is delicious! Try as many things as possible!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Let's just say I will go home saying "pura vida!" to everyone!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Beware of the men in general. It seems you cannot even trust security guards. Also, be careful crossing the street, cars don't usually stop.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

SOL offered everything I needed in the most affordable package I could find!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

If you keep unnecessary items to a minimum, it is very doable.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? My host family cooked every single meal except 3, those were payed by students before or after excursions.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Bring items you need like shaving cream, makeup, soap, shampoo, those items are really expensive in Costa Rica.

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Fluent
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Spanish Phonetics
How many hours per day did you use the language?
