What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained an understanding of a new culture and new people, I gained wonderful connections with people and a sense of self. It was difficult many times but it was worthwhile.

I am interested in policy and may have preferred doing the social policy program, or a program with a more diverse range of students from backgrounds other than medical for a public health based program.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $20
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Exchange half of your us dollars for the currency and utilize your credit card unless you absolutely need to use your cash. Exchange back at the airport when you get back. Budget for the equivalent of 20 us dollars a week into rands. Do not spend on souvenirs until the end of the program.

Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
