SIT Study Abroad: IHP - Cities in the 21st Century: People, Planning and Politics (Fall 2)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It's given me perspective.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

the administration varies by country, and there are strengths and weaknesses in each country. But it was always a very full and informative program.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

At the beginning of each country, there's a safety orientation, and basically, listen to most of that they have to say, because they know what they're talking about. Also, before we leave the first city (the US city - which, for me, was Detroit), we have a few safety talks.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Varied by country, but basically - two meals a day are covered by IHP, the rest is on you.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? talk to alumns before budgeting, everyone will give different things they think yu should budget in.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Open-minded, just so enormously curious about what's out there in the world, and so willing to dive in and work independently and in groups and in a way that you will never get to work at university.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Contemporary Urban Issues

Course Department: 3500
Instructor: Independent Study - Adviser will come
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This is really a lot of what IHP is about. You pick a topic in which you're interested and follow it through each city. You find how your topic manifests itself in each city, and tehre is a very strong observation component. You are assigned a faculty adviser, but you can go to any faculty or country coordinator, or really any one else, for help and advice.
