SIT Study Abroad: Argentina - Public Health in Urban Environments

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a lot of experience within the profession I want to pursue, but also within the culture of Argentina. This has really made me want to explore other countries and get to know them as well.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The education abroad was very through for this program. We learned a ton about the history of Argentina up until the Health Care System. It was a lot of learning.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The team was very helpful and supportive throughout the program. I'm glad to have been with them. Everyone is very friendly and kind.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my host family, I plan to go back soon to visit them one day. No problems with them at all.

* Food:

There is a lot of Italian influence on their food and so expect to eat lots of pasta, empanadas, and milanesas. After a little I was getting tired of the food, but it wasn't hard to find other types of food there since the city is so big,

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone I met always treated me with care, and kindness.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I haven't had any personal experience with the healthcare, so I can't say much.

* Safety:

Being that it is a big city, pickpocketing and robberies are pretty high. This would be the only downside to the city, but this also happens in many other cities in the world.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Very easy, $30 on food and personal expenses a week (depending)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

All the time

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
How many hours per day did you use the language? 10+
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Just be open to practicing.
