Seoul National University: Seoul - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
If I am able to go on this exchange I again, I would not hesitate and register for it again in a heartbeat. I had a great learning experience as well as a cultural experience one I know I will never forget. I learned a lot more about Korean culture and about the Korean language. But I also learned a lot about myself on this trip. Being completely independent from your friends, family, and school was growing experience for me. Learning to rely on myself and just learning to branch out. While on this program I have changed my career goal. After this program I wanted to become more international so my academic goals have completely changed and I want a job in the future where I would be able to either live or visit Korea often. It really is a great country and was a great experience.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Fall 2008

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Professors at Seoul National are very professional, charismatic, and approachable people. I've never experienced a class where I did not agree with the professor's teaching methods or the content being taught. The professors were always available for their students so if there were any questions they were addressed immediately which I greatly appreciated.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Ms. Lydia Kim helpful for any questions and concerns that I had had, however the student buddy program for that university was not exactly organized or helpful. I had signed up for the buddy program to help me get adjusted to the country and the school however my buddy did not show up and when told of the situation nothing became resolved. Also the orientation for the first day was also a bit unorganized therefore there was a lot of confusion going on. But the OIA did try to do events where international students could get to know other international students which I liked.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I stayed at the campus dorms and it was quaint. Great place to study and the laundry room also the mart was not far so it was very convenient. Also the computer/printer room and the gym was not far everything was in a 10 min. distance.

* Food:

The menu also varied and had many options to consider plus ordering out was very simple.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The dorms and the classes made it really easy to meet other international students from the U.S to all over Europe. Many of the older students there would help out showing the newcomers the popular places in Seoul. And everyday there you would have interactions with the natives so everyday was a social/cultural experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

There is a hospital on campus and the rates are low for students. All you would pay for is the medication itself at student price. So all my medical issues were thoroughly addressed. Also the area I stayed in felt very safe because everyone is out late almost every night and it is very lit throughout the entire night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I had to rely a bit on my Korean to be able to communicate with a lot of the Korean students there. It was a bit difficult to communicate in english, but it was not impossible.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? This is a great opportunity and to not go on this trip is completely a mistake. During this exchange you don't just grow academically but you'll be able to network with many from all over the world. Great experience and once you arrive you'll never want to leave. Great Food and even greater sightseeing! I highly highly recommend this program, it's an experience you'll never regret and one you'll always look back on with fond memories!

Comments: We had field trip to an historical site, it was a very hands on class and we had 2 class presentations. It was very interesting and not an extremely hard class to pass. The teacher was always well-prepared and made class very enjoyable.
Credit Transfer Issues: It takes a while for your college to transfer all the credits onto your transcripts so i suggest as soon as the semester/year ends you send your transcripts and syllabuses immediately so you may receive your credits upon arrival to your university

Comments: Very small classroom about 15 students max, so it was more of discussion type of feel and we were required to do 2 presentations. The class was not difficult and you learn a lot about political science, both Korean and American influences on politics as well. The professor is very helpful and knowledgeable on the topic and tries to keep the class excited.
