Savannah State University: Traveling - Study Abroad in China

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I wouldn't choose the same program because I want to go experience other countries. I gained a better understanding of the Chinese culture and I think I grew as a person. I definitely would want to go back to China on vacation and not as a student. There are too many distractions in China. It was hard to stay focused

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I wish we had the opportunity to take classes as if we were going to the institution. We did not have class with other Chinese students nor were we able to take classes with Chinese professors and other international students.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really liked the attractions and places we went to. I gave it a four because the teacher we had did not allow us to go off by ourselves. It would've been 5 if we had more freedom to do things. I wish we could've been able to experience the nightlife with other students from Shanghai.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would advise students who have never been out of their country to travel to China. Many of the students who went on the trip did not have any international experience and saw how fun it would be

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Topic Intercultural Communication

Course Department: ENGL-4400-01
Instructor: Rose Metts
Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was challenging in terms of sending out publications to magazines. However, we had to do a proposal for a grant and I did not think it had anything to do with the class. I wish we focused more on writing. The teacher had a hard time being well prepared and I think i did participate in the class more often than how i did at my home institution
Credit Transfer Issues: They haven't been transfered yet.
