Invaluable experience that set me on the right track Past Review

Sarah Lawrence College: Cinema Sarah Lawrence

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This experience, despite its occasional personal lows, was worth every second of it. It solidified my desire to become a DP (Director of Photography) and I now have a good understanding of how I can manipulate lights to achieve the look I desire. I now know how to create a soft look through using various diffusions and china balls, how to light night for day, or day for night, and how to create a contrasted look. I know now how light interacts with haze, how various colour gels and ND filters do to light, and how light can affect different talent’s faces. I am honoured to be a part of this special group that possessed such a wonderful camaraderie and is composed of such uniquely special individuals. I very much look forward to all the projects on which I will be collaborating with students from this program.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Academically cannot compare to Wellesley's education. Learnt a lot about technical side of film production, but in terms of academic rigour, cannot compare.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Lived in Nantucket Yacht Club dorms - rooms were practically brand new, had our own bathroom, and the entire dorm had very nice amenities.

* Food:

We were catered by the Nantucket Culinary School. Healthy food with good flavour.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Quite decently actually. The locals are extremely friendly and welcomed us well.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had any health issues, but things on Nantucket are VERY expensive so i know other students may not have had the best experience because of the price.

* Safety:

SUPER SAFE. Except for the fact that my very nice bike got stolen on the one weekend that many tourists come :(

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

It was such a rich, meaningful time of growth, learning, self-reflection, friendship, and camaraderie that changed form and meaning each day of the program, but now after this whirlwind has passed, in its wake the effect is felt strongly. And in my heart and my bones do I feel the absence of a world we’d all created together. I only rejoice in that we are all sure to remain in connection with each other, and that our departures only mark the beginning of bright futures, wondrous collaborations, and beautiful relationships to come.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Standard of living is quite expensive in Nantucket. They'd give us a $40 per diem each weekend, but that was NOT enough at all given the cost of food on the island.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • the camaraderie and relationships formed between students
  • the on-hands, technical, almost real-life experience
  • how much it benefitted my future career direction in film production
* What could be improved?
  • the academic quality and depth of its courses
  • its Literature Class
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't care about what other people think that much. Speak up, and communicate what is on your mind. Don't internalize other people's shit.
