About

Even with the US embargo that began in the 1960s, Cuba has developed an effective healthcare system. Although it is a poor nation, it has a health profile similar to those of far wealthier nations. This trip will provide students with a rare opportunity to visit Cuba and to learn about their public health system. Students will learn about Cuba’s system of socialized medicine, tropical infectious disease control, and approaches to primary care. Through lectures and day trips to sites in Havana and Viñales, students will also learn about the history and culture of Cuba and its influences on the arts around the world.

The trip includes visits to local polyclinics, The University of Medical Sciences of Havana Alternative and The Latin American School of Medicine. Students will also attend a talk about natural and traditional medicine in Cuba at the Santiago de las Vegas Clinic. The trip includes trips to important cultural sites including: Vinales (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), José Martí Memorial, and Old Havana.

There are limited seats for this trip. This trip is open to all majors at Regis, however priority is given to students in the Public Health Program. Students should have familiarity with the field of public health.
