Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Food was included with my home university's program fee. Everything on campus closed early on Saturdays, so I had to get food for Saturday nights. Normally it was anywhere between 10 pounds to 20. On other expenses, other than travel related and touristy things, I probably spent 10 pounds a week on things like kleenex and the tube.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eat your meals on campus and buy snacks at Tesco (located down the street on Baker Street-- just a five minute walk from campus). Things like oranges or a bag of crisps are really expensive on campus. Stock up on British goodies once or twice a month. Also, since pretty much everything closes early (9pm-10pm), it's always great to have something to snack on. Also-- Regent's offers tours and trips through Anderson. They are pricey, but convenient. I recommend not going to ALL of the tours they offer, but pick and choose and coordinate with your study abroad friends. Some of the trips they offer are cheaper if you go on your own, others (like the Stonehenge and Bath trip) make sense to go along with your fellow study abroaders. :)

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Location. Regent's is right in the middle of London, right next to Baker Street. Couldn't think of a better location!
  • Professors. I learned a lot and they were also understanding of the fact that we were study abroaders.
* What could be improved?
  • The dorms. They were great-- but there was never anyone to quiet the students down after midnight. Way too often I would wake up to loud, drunks students, slamming doors, loud music.
  • The food prices. As good as some dishes were, the prices for the food was terrible for study abroaders.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I know now how big London really is. I wish that I knew that before going on this program because I would have better planned my day trips. I would have stuck more so to London than going out of the country.

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
