PRESHCO: Study Abroad in Córdoba, Spain

Yes, definitely worthwhile even just as a break from the constant stress of the home colleges participating in the program.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was ten times lighter, the grading system was inconsistent across teacher's and often very hard to predict. The professors in our PRESHCO program who taught classes with only our program students in them, tried often to cater to an interactive style of teaching, engaging us, whereas the professors of our direct-enrollment classes were much more varied and many focused many on lectures.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

There was incredible support in the program - with tiny to large problems, there were 3-4 helpful people working in the office, right where we had classes, and they would go to extreme lengths to help you out if in any way possible. Three were locals so had immense knowledge about the city and about the way things worked there in general. The last was from one of our US colleges so offered a different but also helpful perspective.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The program arranged housing for us based on our preferences in a detailed housing form. The neighborhood was very very safe - I lived in the historic zone which was incredibly beautiful. Far from many of the other students (half an hour walk from "Ciudad Jardin" where many students lived) but for me, totally worth it, with a few friends close by and the beauty of the area as compared to the more city-ish, boring, "modern" side of Cordoba. Not as close to clubs so walking with a friend or taking a taxi necessary at night. Everything provided at our house besides our toiletries, and we were treated warmly and inclusively by our family.

* Food:

My family accomodated not only my dietary restrictions, but also my housemate and my food preferences,which often clashed with what they usually ate, but they still accomodated what we needed/preferred.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved Romeria (a long walk in our fancy Sevillanas dresses), Feria, field trips to Granada and Sevilla, the dinners at the RD's house, the birthday cake parties arranged for all the birthdays, the Lluvia de Estrellas at the end, the patios, the Cruces (lots of festivals in the SPRING, definitely the time to go, none of these are present in the fall!)

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Maybe $30 a week on food (not meals, only ice cream, tea, etc.), and then maybe $25 a week if going out to clubs with covers/drinks.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? plan ahead for traveling as it consumes much more than you would expect

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Spanish 255
Language acquisition improvement?

-family and professors -used Spanish everyday since family/professors did not speak any English -all local people do not speak Spanish -speak English pretty exclusively with other American students (with whom you have the majority of your classes)

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
