London was Great! Past Review

By (Secondary English Education, Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville) for

Missouri Consortium: Missouri London Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I really enjoyed my study abroad experience but, as I have stated several times already, I would not use CAPA again. My experience has not changed my academic interests or future plans but I definitely feel that experiencing London has given me a greater understanding and appreciation for my chosen field.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I cannot find fault with any of my academic experiences.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

CAPA was very unorganized and slow to respond to problems.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing itself was fine but our flat did not have hot water in the kitchen or the bathroom sink. Also, the beds were not well made and fell apart frequently.

* Food:

None of our food was provided by CAPA so I bought what I liked, thus, my satisfaction was excellent.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I absolutely loved experiencing the historical aspects of London and the surrounding country. Stonehenge was amazing and I especially loved visiting the British Museum.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

London's air is VERY dirty and I ended up with some sinus issues that I had never experienced before. Healthcare was easily accessible as there are Boot's Pharmacies all over the place and the pharmacists were able to assist in ways that are very different from the pharmacists here in the States.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would suggest not using CAPA as the facilitator for your visit. Also, expect to pay more for everyday items in the UK.
