London School of Economics (LSE): London - General Course, Year-Long Study Abroad Programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned I could live on my own, which felt great. I gained a few very close friends which made the year worth it.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academics at the LSE are fantastic, but they are a significant change from academics in the U.S. and it required a lot of effort to adapt to the new learning style.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I was not overly involved with the administration and my academic advisor never scheduled a meeting. However, I know people whose academic advisors were very involved in their transition.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in one of the best parts of the city - Trafalgar Square and my accommodations were wonderful.

* Food:

I was self-catered and learned to cook this year as a result, something I really enjoy.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The school did not make an explicit effort to involve my program in the campus, but it gave us the tools to do it ourselves with open access to any clubs we were interested in.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had to see a doctor once during the year and I was able to do that quickly through my school's medical center. I was then referred for an x-ray that took very little time and a further appointment that was very efficient. And I didn't have to pay, which was a perk.

* Safety:

I have never not felt safe in London, it has been great.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It depended on the week and what I wanted to do, but being self-catered and just with food expenses I spent between 70 and 100 pounds a week.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 70-100 pounds a week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? It is a really good idea to keep track of what you are spending in and excel spreadsheet. It really brings home how quickly your money disappears.
