KIIS: Traveling - Experience Spain & Morocco (Summer)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have been able to go to many places around the world and this was just as rewarding. I have never experienced Arabic culture and this was extremely eye-opening.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload is enough. This was like a "Living Labortory".

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Program was small because of people fair of the North Africa's issues. But this did not affect us at all. If they went, they would have learnt why it would not affect Marocco. Now this program does not go to Marocco but only to Spain.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Breakfast is the only thing you did not have to pay for. This was normal international food. You could experience local food with everything else.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Was able to go to Fez, Marocco and Granada, Spain. Very educational. However, I wish it could have included more locations and longer time instead of day-trips.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Like any place, one needs to go out with friends and fellow students. sometimes, I was able to go out by myself and nothing happened. Just be cautions and not go in suspicious places.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

Arabic: I never new any Arabic but knowing a bit of French was helpful. The professors knew that this program was too short to really pick up the language.

A Look Back

  • Freedom of movement (with fair warning but nothing bad)
* What could be improved?
  • Laundry facilities (esp. for Marocco)
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Come open-minded! Bring your summer close and bring extra money to go for additional personal trips.
