German Life in Wuerzburg Past Review

By (International Relations And Global Studies, The University of Texas at Austin) - abroad from 03/15/2013 to 08/15/2013 with

Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg: Wurzburg - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was worthwhile because I needed to Study Abroad in order to graduate, but I would rather have gone during a summer semester so that I did not waste so much of my time.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

For my experience, it was not academically challenging at all which was a let down. Resources are sparse and not very helpful when compared to what we have at UT- Austin. When you pay the same amount as if you are studying back home you expect a lot. In reality, Europeans students pay a fraction of what we pay for one semester and so the resources available at this university reflected that.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Housing was very helpful and swift in getting me a room. But it was very small. Peter-Schneider Strasse building 7 is new and modern compared to the other buildings.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Maybe 100 Euros or less
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Not really

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? GER331L ?
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Study, study, study and don't be afraid to practice with native speakers.
