Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Volunteer work was challenging but extremely rewarding. It went above and beyond expectations. There is a language barrier, especially with younger children, but they are eager and grateful to have you there.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

We had excellent support in South Africa. Our project leaders were available whenever and for whatever. They really ensured our safety and our comfort while staying in the area.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The host families were outstanding. I felt safe and at home. They really welcomed us with open arms!

* Food:

Our host families provided our meals, and man could they cook! :)

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Because the majority of our time was focused on project, there weren't many opportunities to have cultural experiences. But, our project leaders did their best to fit in as many activities as possible. We visited the cultural centre in the township, we met a variety of people that lived there, but most importantly we stayed with host families and experienced their way of life. We were lucky compared to other projects in terms of cultural integration.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did require a visit to a local clinic while on project. It was an easy visit, we didn't have to wait long and we were provided transportation there and back by our project leader. The clinic operated in a similar way that one would at home. We talked with the doctor and she gave us a prescription as needed. We did not need any vaccines for the part of South Africa we visited.

* Safety:

I felt safe walking around the township. As a white North American, we were definitely the minority, but it was never uncomfortable or intimidating.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not going to lie, it is an expensive program. However, ISV has amazing administration available to help you with everything, plus they have fabulous in-country staff. They organize everything for you - group flights, accommodations, transport, everything. It was worth every penny.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We spent our whole time on project working with kids who did not speak much English. We needed to learn some basic phrases of Xhosa in order to communicate. It was minimal but so necessary!

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
