Unforgettable New Zealand Experience! February 01, 2024

By (Computer Science, Middlebury College) - abroad from 02/16/2023 to 06/23/2023 with

IFSA: Wellington - Victoria University of Wellington

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was so worthwhile. Living on my own in a foreign city was a huge growth experience, and I loved being able to travel around the country for hikes and nature experiences. School was challenging but I loved socializing and exploring the city when I had free time.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes I took were challenging and formatted differently than I was used to; lots of lecture halls, not as much interaction with students and professors. I learned a lot and the professors were really informative.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I had a program advisor in the city with me who checked in with me often and planned fun social events for us. Orientation in Auckland was also very helpful, and the program really helped us transition smoothly.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had my own room in a flat of 5 people. It was very nice and I had everything I needed. It was a short walk into the city center but was in a quiet residential area. It was a 10-minute walk up to campus.

* Food:

Food there was pretty similar to what you'll find in any U.S. city, but there is maybe more Asian influence. Lots of sushi places, Indian, Thai, Malaysian restaurants, and plenty of any type of cuisine you could want. Grocery shopping was fairly easy and navigable; I could choose what to cook for myself so I could make any familiar dishes I wanted.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt very well integrated with the local culture; the city had a similar culture to any U.S. city. The people there were very friendly, and I loved learning about Maori culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had to get prescription refills while I was there, which was a bit of a process going through my Middlebury psychiatrist and home pharmacies, but the university health center helped me out no problem once I had an appointment.

* Safety:

I felt very safe in Wellington; it is a lovely city and very walkable, people are friendly and I did not feel threatened in any way when I was out by myself. I lived in a nice residential area, and we rarely ever locked our flat doors.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I made my closest friends through IFSA and the orientation program as well as my program advisor made the transition so smooth. I felt really cared for while I was there.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I was well supported by my parents, so I did not have to worry as much, but Wellington can be a very expensive city. Grocery shopping, though, I was able to find the cheapest items I needed and cut down on expenses.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $300

Comments: I suppose I learned a good deal in this course, and assignments were helpful in cementing learning, but the lectures were the least interactive and the professors spoke and went through slides very quickly, so I had the impression that everyone in the class was struggling to understand.

Comments: This class was very interesting and not too challenging. Assignments allowed me to explore and reflect on the material in an open, creative way, and readings and videos were really eye-opening and I feel like I learned so much about Pacific Islander culture through their music and dance practices. Also learned a lot about social issues regarding indigenous cultures and tourism.
