What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was an amazing experience. I feel like really grew from it. It made me a more independent person, I was so used to things being easy at home but I really had to learn to do everything for myself. I loved being put into that situation. I learned to appreciate different types of art, theatre and the people around me. The experience made me want to potentially live abroad at one point.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teaching is so different from at Austin College, you have a lecture and a seminar, which is after your lecture where you discuss the topics discussed in the lecture. Also, there is less interaction with professors, you meet with your seminar leader once a week for each class. Grading is very confusing when you begin, because unlike in the US where a 70 is a C, it is actually equivalent to an A in the UK, so don't worry too much if you get 56, because that is around a B. The workload was not bad at all, they give you a syllabus and you have a couple papers, and maybe a test or two and then the finals which varies for classes. I had one real final exam and three papers due.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived right across from Madame Tussaud's. The dorm was very nice. We had the business campus connected to our dorm and another one of the campuses was a 20 minute walk away. All the rooms were singles, and you shared a kitchen with five people. The security was good, so no unallowed guest were able to get into the building.

The neighborhood was very safe, there were not many nightlife areas directly near our dorm, but there were nightlife areas a 10 minute bus ride away. this was right near 2 of the campuses and pretty close to central london. You were required to buy your own room supplies, like linens, blankets, etc. and cookware and food.

* Food:

it was just difficult having to cook for yourself everyday, plus groceries and things were a little expensive in London.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I signed up for the Social Program offered by the university, it was a great experience. I got to go to some places I probably would have never visited on my own. Even if you don't know anyone on your trips just try talking to people because they are all exchange students as well. So I really recommend signing up for that if your school offers it.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It was pretty safe, there were clinics around if you needed anything. I didn't really have any health issues I needed to address there.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? maybe around 100-150 pounds a week. Things are very expensive in London.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't buy too many fresh fruits or vegetables if you don't plan on eating them right away because fresh produce goes bad very, very quickly. Buy meats and freeze the amount you won't be eating for the week. Try not to buy things you don't really need. Try to do your grocery shopping at a bigger supermarket. It may be a little further but the prices are cheaper so bring a small suitcase of something to put all your groceries in a bring them home with you. Carrying them all is extremely difficult so make sure you have something to carry them in. Because often it will end up being a lot heavier than you expect.

Myth and Method in Psychology

Course Department: 1Psy406
Instructor: staff
Instruction Language: english
Comments: This course was interesting, the topics ranged from hypnosis to astrology. You don't really have any communication with the lecture staff and basically the lectures are put into powerpoint presentations and you can get them online on your blackboard page. This class was not particularly difficult, I felt that the seminar leaders just reiterated what was said in Lectures and seminars were not as helpful as I would have liked them to be.

Work Psychology

Course Department: 4HRB552
Instructor: Staff
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This is business course, so you get the business side of psychology. It is a little difficult you only have one midterm and a final exam. You have to make sure to go to all of the seminars because it gives you a lot of information you need to know. The lectures are usually posted online in powerpoint format.

London Theatre in Performance

Course Department: 1Enl420
Instructor: Staff
Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was a great course, it really broadens your knowledge on different types of theatre productions. You see one to two plays each week and discuss them in your seminar. There is no lecture for this course, just a seminar to discuss the shows you have seen. You also have a group project on one of the topics/plays discussed in seminar and a Final paper in which you are given around 10 questions and you pick one to write a 2000 word paper on. I loved this class it really brings you out into the major and minor productions going on in London.

Modern Art in London

Course Department: 2MMA412
Instructor: Katie Hayes
Instruction Language: English
Comments: If you are interested in art this class is great, you learn about all the different styles. You check out the major art galleries in London as well as small galleries that you probably would have never visited on your own. Some of the art is really different that anything you've ever seen before it just opens your mind to appreciate it more.
