Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I absolutely loved my classes, and there were many resources available. I only give it 3 1/2 stars for two reasons: 1. The intensity of the classes was much less than I was used to, and 2. I wish there had been a larger variety of courses offered in German. I must say that even though the intensity of classes was less, I still feel like I learned a great amount during the semester.

On-site administration of your program

The administration was deeply engaged in helping the students, and were always there if we needed something. I got to know them and I felt like they really cared to get to know each student individually, as well.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My apartment was very modern, and there was a balcony, which was nice. However, I was disappointed that while I was paying the same amount as everyone for housing, I did not have the same amount of space as everyone else. We did not have a living room and I shared a very small room with someone else from the program. Our apartment was also far away from the U-Bahn (underground tram, which was most convenient), but we could take a street tram to get most places.

We bought and cooked our own food, which was exciting, as it felt very independent.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

While it was exciting to attend theater and musical performances, being at an institution with all Americans did not allow for much integration within the local culture. I did live with an Austrian RA, which was nice, as then I had the opportunity to speak German with her. We also had the opportunity to have Austrian "language buddies," to practice speaking and learn more about the culture.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any specific issues during the program, but IES made sure we had healthcare, and told us which doctors to go to. They were always there if we had any additional questions. Also, when I did hear of students going to get help, it cost very little compared to in the US.

Vienna is known for being extremely safe, and I did feel safe the whole time I was there!

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I sometimes felt as if I was spending too much. It was hard for me to figure out what was normal, as I wasn't used to buying groceries in addition to other expenses in the US. Also, having to constantly convert the euro to dollar was difficult at times.

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

I wish there had been more opportunities to speak German, or at least more courses offered in German.
