IES Abroad: Sydney - Study Australia Summer

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I think about my study abroad experience every day and it has given me a whole new perspective on my life and the world. I wish everyone could get the opportunity to travel, make lasting memories, and form lifetime friendships just like I did because I know it will be one of their best decisions of their life. It was definitely worth it and if I could do it all over again I would and that includes every up and down.

There were plenty of food options and a wide variety readily available with the multiculturalism that came with the Sydney atmosphere.

* Safety:

I was living in the center of the city and I felt safe the whole time even when I was walking alone at night coming back from the harbour.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I have no idea where to begin. I was pleasantly surprised by how great the IES abroad staff were. They always responded to my emails fairly quickly and they provided me with the all the information and materials to ensure I was prepared before I got to my destination. I thought for sure I was going to have to figure out all of it on my own, but there was no such problem. I was fortunate enough to attend the six week study abroad program in Sydney, Australia. I consider it the best decision of my undergraduate career; my only regret is not staying for a whole semester if not a year! If I had time I would for sure choose another IES program and travel down under again.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Start saving your money EARLY! It's always good to have back-up finances in case of emergencies as well as just to splurge.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The 4 day field trip to the Outback
  • Living location in the city
  • The memories and friends I made
* What could be improved?
  • I wish the program was longer than 6 weeks. Possibly an 8 week program or longer.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew just how expensive it was to live in Sydney in general. I went into it knowing it would be expensive, but I wish I did a little more research. I suggest thoroughly researching your abroad city/country you plan on visiting.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
