Marchutz: A Home Away From Home Past Review

By (International Relations And Global Studies, The University of Texas at Austin) for

Institute for American Universities (IAU): The Marchutz School of Fine Arts, Aix-en-Provence, France

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Marchutz changed my life. I've always liked art, but never had the opportunity to pursue it. Now I have the courage and confidence to be an artist. This study abroad experience will expose your weaknesses and your strengths. I learned to make decisions for myself. I learned how to be responsible and how to take it easy. I realized how much I love Texas, and I broke through stereotypes I had about the French. Don't miss the opportunity.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My only complaint is for my French course - the students were not properly evaluated in skill/knowledge so the class was too difficult for some and too easy for others. The syllabus did not match the actual course material.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Very professional and sufficient for such a small administration.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Adjusting to a host family is difficult no matter how wonderful they might be. I wish I could have been provided with more information about what to expect from my host family - which turned out to be one 79 year old woman. It was wonderful, but I was not prepared for the adjustments/culture shock I would have. The room and food were very satisfactory. My apartment/neighborhood was very safe, but was a bit of a walk from school and nightlife. I bought a bike which made things much easier.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Aix is probably the safest city I have ever been to. You should still practice precaution as you would anywhere else. Do not trust strangers, do not get really drunk and be alone at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Students should be refunded for meals during winter/spring break when they are usually not with their host. Student's meals should be covered for Venice painting trip.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Intro to French II
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

Everyone at school speaks English, which makes it difficult to improve your French without some effort. You can speak French with your host families - that's where I got the most/best practice. There is also a Francophone club with weekly activities that you can join to meet and talk with French students. You will also be speaking French in daily interactions with people in the city.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If you have little or no experience in art, you will never have a better chance to discover art and yourself. If you think you know everything about art, get ready to have your life changed.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

European City in Literature and FIlm

Course Department: LIT 375
Instructor: Smith, Leigh
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Wonderful class. Leigh is very knowledgeable in this subject though at times his opinions/thoughts seem to be biased and from a text book. This is not to say that he is stubborn and closed to new ideas, on the contrary. Don't be afraid to think for yourself and express your differing opinions - he very much appreciates input and discussion. If you enjoy reading and watching movies, this class is for you!

Painting

Course Department: ART 358
Instructor: Gasparach, John and Roberts, Alan
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Daily practice painting with oils (or other medium if preferred). Portraits, copies, landscape. Discussion of color theory, evaluations of depth, relationships. Independent and individual teaching. You will be amazed by the improvement that comes from daily practice and being forced to see for yourself rather than being told "how to paint". Valuable knowledge and skill gained.

Essentials of Intermediate French II

Course Department: FRE 203
Instructor: Martin, Annabel
Instruction Language: French, English
Comments: Very thorough course, heavy focus on grammar. Martin is wonderful and happy to take time to explain until you understand. Be sure to speak with her to discuss whether it is the right level for you or not. Don't be afraid to try out a few different levels of courses to find the right fit, as I moved up one level and still found this course to be too easy. I had 2 semesters (10 hours) of college French before coming.
