About

Hokkaido University (HU) is one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious universities in Japan. The university has the largest number of faculties out of Japan’s national universities, covering almost all area of the humanities and social and natural sciences.

HU is offering a new summer program, the Hokkaido Summer Institute (HSI). It is a program that brings together world-leading researchers with proven educational and research records, and provides educational courses in cooperation with the HU faculty members. For example, in 2017 more than 140 researchers from over 110 universities/research institutes from all over the world will gather at HU. HSI allows its participants to expand their knowledge of subjects in world-class research fields of Hokkaido University which used to be open only to students of the University. Program participants have opportunities to attend classes such as field training using Hokkaido’s extensive land, and active learning to develop human resources capable of thriving on the world stage.

The medium of instruction at HSI is English.  The University has high expectations that HSI students will cultivate a better understanding of other cultures and improve communication skills through exchanges with researchers and students from other countries. Off-campus events and field trips are also planned to let the participants enjoy Hokkaido’s beautiful summer.
