Hanyang University: Seoul - International Summer School

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned Korean, learned how to trust strangers and travel alone. Best summer of my life yet.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It's summer, how hard can the classes be. The professors are very intuitive in terms of teaching and encourage class participation.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The volunteer students were very helpful and friendly, I even made friends with some of them. I am inspired by them to volunteer back to the next Hanyang International Summer School if it is possible.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The on campus dorm was not up to my expectation. However the Resident Assistants are very friendly. More events could have been held at night after dinner to bond the hall mates together.

* Food:

There's a variety of Korean food inside of campus and the streets nearby.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Did not have any healthcare problems. But there's a university hospital nearby.

* Safety:

Korea is very safe, I had not witness any aggression or violence throughout my stay.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

If you eat on campus it is very affordable. However since you are in Korea, why bound yourself to on campus food? There are tons of other Korean and international cuisines left to be discovered.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 200$
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't expect to save because there's so many fun and nice things to eat and do. Just enjoy the summer.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

I was enrolled in Korean Beginner Level, I tried to apply everything learnt in class when I am outside of school. Ordering food, buying stuff, asking for directions etc

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Chinese
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Grasp the basics alphabets, in Korea's case is Han-gul. Then learn the basics like thank you, asking for direction before arrival. Helps alot in addition to the hand signals and stuff to convey your message.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
