Hansard Scholars Programme Past Review

Hansard Scholars Programme: London - Hansard Society

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes. Living in London was awesome. More importantly I spent a month backpacking europe which was amazing and would have been impossible if I stayed at home. The three stars doesn't include the backpacking its a combo of two star program(only because of the internship) and four for living in London.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I don't really feel like I learned anything from the classes. I learned a fair bit from reading the papers and asking the girls at work questions but thats about it.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Helpful when I had a question but didn't do anything amazing.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Points for being cheap. I cooked a lot of rice and beans because we had a full kitchen and I have no money.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

London is safe. No health problems or anything from the group I was with.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 200-250 USD. I bought and cooked all of my food with the exception of maybe 8 meals the entire time I was in London. Prices in london are inflated and with the exchange rate everything costs about twice as much as in the US. I also didn't do any shopping or pay for transportation. Other people in my program were spending about 2k a month.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Most people should aim for a middle amount. Few people are willing to go without a lot of the things I went without but, most people won't be able to spend at the level others on my program were spending either.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
