Hobobo in Rock Bottom Past Review

By (Bridgewater College) - abroad from 09/22/2016 to 12/21/2016 with

University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Summer in Cyprus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about different cultures and lifestyles from other international students, and gained so many friends who I will continue to keep in contact with and hopefully visit in the future. This trip really opened my eyes to what is really out there in the world and how amazing people can be.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Beds/ pillows were very low quality, we had a bug problem that was not addressed, and there was constant mold.

* Food:

We weren't really provided with food. It was mostly on our own.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Loved it! Everyone in the area was so nice and there were very few cultural barriers.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had to go to a health provider myself, but I did take others.

* Safety:

There was never a point on the trip where I felt unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would choose this program only if I could return with the same people. Cyprus was nothing like I thought it would be, but the experiences I had with the people made up for it. Definitely don't take these people for granted.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200-250
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't blow it all the first month, I know it's all really exciting but you do have to survive for 2 more months. If you have the money, travel all you can.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The people
  • Traveling
* What could be improved?
  • Housing
  • Student Help
  • Clarification of program
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would have known I was going to be in a land locked city and what the program entailed. I chose this program mainly for the fact that is was sold as a beach town and we would be near the coast. It is a bit of shock when you think you're coming to a beautiful beach town, only to arrive in the dusty city of Nicosia. Not that Nicosia didn't have it's positives, it's just not at all what I was expecting.
