FIE (Foundation for International Education): London - Study and Intern Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
There's so much in the response to that. I gained perspective, inspiration, adaptability, friends, memories etc. I was very worthwhile I would do it again if the opportunity came to me.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

FIE provided us (communication students) with professors from the BBC and other distinguished organizations. They were able to supplement the course theories and concepts with personal anecdotes from their experiences. This added another dimension to the concepts and engaged us as learners.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I heard of some students having issues but in my personal experience I found the administration at FIE very kind and accommodating.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I stayed in Mansion SW3 off King's Road in Chelsea. The location in one of London's most posh neighborhoods rich in contemporary culture. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. The rooms were cleaned every week and all issues I ran into had to do with other students laziness with dishes, none to do with the residency nor the program itself.

* Food:

We weren't given food through the program, but there were plenty of grocery stores and great food spots nearby the residency.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I'm giving this 5 stars because I became very integrated with the local culture. However this was due to my own efforts and open-mindedness. FIE provides PLENTY of opportunities to become integrated but won't hold your hand and do it for you.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had no issues with healthcare but heard from other students that they had a few minor troubles.

* Safety:

Incredibly safe, especially with the program located in South Kensington.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

London is expensive. There is a lot of cultural capital to gain from it's price and it requires discipline and planning to do. Students who fail to have planning skills or discipline may not do well.

  • The location
  • The global citizens you meet in London
  • London culture
* What could be improved?
  • I personally felt a bit spoiled, I don't think anything
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? How expensive the experience will be and the endless opportunities that await in London. I would have be much more proactive in starting new relationships.
