European Study Center: Heidelberg - Study Abroad in the EU

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was completely worthwhile. I gained patience and bravery, and a lot of adventures and new friends.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Some classes, like the history and experiential one, were really serious and well given. Others were vague and not very demanding, even if the professor is very well prepared. The German course was really worth it.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

N/A We bought our own food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program is not bad and the housing accommodations are very good, but since we live in the same place that we take classes and only with people from outside of Germany, the integration with the local culture and people might be zero if you don't get involved in other activities on your own

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

N/A I did not have any experience related with healthcare

* Safety:

The city is very safe in general. I would only recommend people not to go alone to places, especially girls, because they get exposed to receive comments that could make them feel uncomfortable. But nothing serious ever happened.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

The program is good, but I would choose a program that would help me get involved directly with the local culture and people.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

2.5 It is possible to make a weekly 20 euro grocery shopping, but the expenses on transportation, food outside the house, trips, etc. make life in a tight budget very difficult.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? around 50 euros, without trips.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Walk rather than use the public transportation system, because it is very expensive. Avoid eating out too much and try to establish a budget for groceries from the beginning.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

The whole program was in a foreign language (English), plus the German course

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
How many hours per day did you use the language? 10+
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Talking to natives, trying to order food, do shopping, ask for directions, etc. using the other language.

Instructor: Mr. Thomas Leibrecht

Comments: It's the most worthy class to take in here. It takes advantage of nearby towns, history, etc. and even if the process of making the portfolio seems tedious at the beginning, it is very easily doable and a great thing to take back home.
