Much more representative of real-life than American Universities are. Past Review

By (Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences and Italian Studies, Wellesley College) - abroad from 08/06/2013 to 12/20/2013 with

Eastern College Consortium (ECCO): Bologna - Università di Bologna Study Abroad Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes it was worthwhile! I gained a ton of confidence that I've now brought back with me to campus and is helping me deal with adapting to my return from abroad. I discovered a lot about myself, like the things that are important to me (happiness, no stress, friendship, exploration, intellectual freedom, curiosity, health). This experience has changed my life. I'M SO HAPPY I DID IT!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Giuliana DeMeo and Nella were SO WONDERFUL! They made the whole program work. Christina was also a fantastic addition to the staff, because she was a great transition between the American students and the Italian staff (because she was a student our age and had studied in the states). But the director of the program, Ellen, was very cold and didn't make any clear effort to do an ounce more work than she had to for her job description. She didn't seem to care about us genuinely, but was more interested in getting to live in Italy for a year at the cost of having to manage us students. She seems like a really dynamic and interesting person with a great sense of humor whom I would like to get to know, but she was not a good choice as director of the program.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my roommate and suitemates. The only problem was that Ghigi, the dorm I was in, was about a 30 minute walk from the city center, which could make life unnecessarily difficult very often. Perhaps Ecco could select a dorm slightly closer.

* Food:

I made all my own food. It was great! I also ate lots of delicious stuff at restaurants!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program did a GREAT job with integrating cultural activities into our studies. I really appreciated this and benefited from it. THANK YOU GIULIANA!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had occasion to use the services of the doctor available to us, but he seemed nice, and Ecco did a good job of outlining very clearly what health services were available.

* Safety:

I LOVE Bologna SOOOOO much, but I cannot pretend that it is a safe city or that I didn't feel very fearful frequently. I had the most frightening experiences of my life so far in that city. You have to look out for yourself and your friends and be very smart about when and where you walk around and what impression you give off to people who might want to harm you. I wouldn't say that this is a reason not to go though.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It wasn't too bad. I just had a major weakness for buying brie, prosciutto, and wine though!

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 100-150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook at home with friends and get reasonably priced food out, so that you can save enough money to go crazy and get some really high quality food sometimes. Don't get mediocre food; get really cheap and really expensive food, that way you get to have broader experiences for the same amount of money.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

They encouraged a lot but didn't enforce that much.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? The highest level at Wellesley College (a 300-level seminar class for literature).
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Have Italians you talk to who don't try to speak English with you, and then talk to those people on a regular basis. Have a lot of in-depth emotional conversations in Italian. It will make you not self-conscious of the language anymore. Resist the temptation to hang-out with other Americans too much, and if you do, try to speak in Italian with them.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The cultural activities planned for us
  • The helo with getting us through all the beurocratic loops in government and the university system
  • The security blanket it provided for whatever problem we were encountering
* What could be improved?
  • Make sure the director isn't just qualified, but personable and invested in the students
  • Not have a bunch of Americans spending all their time in a little office and then be surprised when they start speaking English!
  • Give us a week or so at the end of the program after final exams are finished so that we can enjoy the city. It was awful having finals the same day we were leaving! It was a terrible way to end a beautiful experience!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew more about the technical difficulties involved with living in Europe (internet connection issues). I would like a detailed chart of different options for what you should do with your smartphone when abroad, how to deal with internet problems on your computer, and how people should financially prepare (should you bring a credit AND debit card? A traveler's card? Something else? What are your options if you don't have a viable way of withdrawing money?).

Italian for Academic Purposes

Course Department: Ecco internal course
Instructor: Ivan Tassi
Instruction Language: Italian
Comments: Ivan is the best teacher I've ever had in my life...Including all at Wellesley, who are absolutely amazing also! I learned more from him about honing my Italian writing and reading skills than I learned for years previous to taking his course. He was so kind and caring with all the students, but also just an absolute GENIUS! Please find a way for him to teach at Wellesley! Everyone would major in Italian just to have a class with him!

Art history of Bologna from 14-16 centuries

Course Department: Ecco internal course
Instructor: Elisabetta Cunsolo
Instruction Language: Italian
Comments: I absolutely loved the professor for this course, but I did think that the course was slightly too challenging for the general level of the students. The professor expected too much of us (she expected that we write incredibly exact, incredibly observant, grammatically excellent paper in Italian about facts that were usually only mentioned one time in passing in lecture). It was a very strussful course, even though I loved it a lot. The professor did a great job, but I left the course feeling disappointed in myself.

Eating Pages: Cultural History

Course Department: Ecco internal course
Instructor: Beatrice Collina
Instruction Language: Italian
Comments: I loved the actual material covered in this class, but the professor was awful. She never learned anyone's name, she never treated us like real people, but rather would lecture at us without any concern for whether we understood or enjoyed the material. She had incredibly unclear expectations about what she wanted from us, and a completely arbitrary grading scale.

Poesia per musica e musica per poesia

Course Department: DAMS University of Bologna
Instructor: Marco Beghelli
Instruction Language: Italian
Comments: I loved the content of this course, and I really enjoyed the lectures, but the professor had an unrealistic and unclear expectation of how much we were supposed to read in preparation for the final exam (in excess of 1000 pages of technical material in Italian) and an arbitrary final assessment and grading. I loved the course, but the unfairness of the professor left a bad taste in my mouth.
