Life Changing Past Review

By (Wheaton College, MA) - abroad from 05/24/2016 to 06/11/2016 with

DIS Summer in Scandinavia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned to be more independent and to become brave, when it comes to navigating unfamiliar places.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I would like to have a more face to face meeting with the administration and also a longer orientation because I felt that everything was rushed.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I really wish that there was a wellness dorm, substance free, meaning a dorm for students, who were not into drugs or drinking. It was difficult for me to meet other students like me in my dorm. Also, I was frustrated with the amount of drinking and partying that was happening in my dorm.

* Food:

Food was excellent for the most part, but I do wish that the food stores had more frozen food available.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I had a difficult time fitting into Denmark's drinking culture because I am a non-drinker, and it was harder for me to find people like me. Meaning people, who were not into drinking.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I was able to access to counseling within a day's notice.

* Safety:

Copenhagen is an extremely safe city, and I was not worry.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would definitely choose the same program, but I would like to see some changes like implementing a wellness-dorm. It would make my experience more worth while, if I had other students like me.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The currency rate for the US dollar to the Danish kroner was really low, and I struggled to live on a student's budget. The big downside for me was the cost of food because I found food to be very expensive.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $400

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The kind of environment that I was going into because I came from a tiny liberal arts college, and I had no idea what anything was like outside of my tiny college. I wish I knew more about the type of students that DIS has.
