DIS Summer in Scandinavia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
A more global perspective on my life and my work.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Field trips were fascinating and the material was interesting. The only problem I had was that I would have liked more ongoing feedback from the instructor during the class--we had only received one assignment back graded by the time we finished the class.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Staff very helpful!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Room got hot at times, lots of stairs to climb.

* Food:

We were on our own for food so this really does not apply.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Mostly I was on my own for this but I did get to talk to some people.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I fell twice and did talk with someone there; we decided that not a lot could be done and it would only take time to get better.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I did gain a lot of knowledge and see a lot of interesting sights.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I have some resources although Copenhagen is an expensive city.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75-100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Use public transportation when possible; it is very reasonably priced. Also take plastic bottles with the black swirly sign that says "PANT" back to Fakta and you can get credit toward groceries. There is a very reasonably-priced boat trip that will show you the whole harbor area also.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

The Networker
An active student leader, it was important for you to network abroad as well. Once overseas, you sought out student clubs, volunteered with local organizations, or attended community events. You encouraged your friends join you, and often considered how you could reflect your international experiences in a resume.
