DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Studying abroad was one of the best things I've ever done in my life.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Fall 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I loved my DIS classes and the fact that most of them stressed immersive situations.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my host family. I had two host sisters and a host mom and dad and the family welcomed me like one of their own. It was really great and I miss them a lot.

My housing situation really made it easier for me to transition into studying and life in Denmark.

* Food:

my host mom was a great cook

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I always felt safe in Copenhagen, we were very lucky to be in such a safe place.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Copenhagen is an EXTREMELY expensive city, but living in a host family kept my expenses down.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Copenhagen is on an island, so travel expenses are higher than they would be for other people who study abroad in a mainland program.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?

I think my non-verbal language skills improved a lot because I had to learn to get by without a common language. It was important for us to be good communicators not just in language.
