We need to go back to Denmark ASAP October 23, 2026
By A student (Wellesley College) - abroad from 01/19/2026 to 05/20/2026 with
DIS Copenhagen: Semester
I learned how to let go a little and have more fun. I experienced so many new things and ways of life. It was absolutely worthwhile.
Personal Information
| How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | None |
Review Your Program
|
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The classes are not as intense as the ones from my home institution, but it never felt like I was not learning or wasting time. There was still new content, and the instructors really valued hands-on learning, especially with the incorporation of field studies. |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The admin was so helpful and there was information for pretty much any scenario you could imagine. I lost my grocery card once and there was a whole webpage on how to get a new one. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I absolutely loved my housing. I had a bathroom, kitchenette, dining table, and everything I needed was provided. It took off so much stress of having to find things like bedding or cleaning supplies. My kollegium was also really big, and only a 20-minute walk from DIS. |
| * Food: |
It was new coming to Denmark and having to cook for myself 24/7. The grocery card was great to have. I had $600 for the whole semester and finished it a week before I had to go home, so it lasted a good amount of time. However, I will say that the Danish grocery stores are quite small and you have to shop at multiple to get all the supplies you need. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I didn't get to talk to that many Danes, but the ones I did meet were lovely people! I wish I had gone to find more opportunities to meet more people that were Danish. I do feel I got to learn a lot about the culture from the Danish faculty, field studies, and courses. |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I had a health card, but I never ended up going to the doctor luckily. I know people did and said it was easy to do so. DIS also has a lot of information related to medical assistance. I did not need any vaccines for this program. |
| * Safety: |
Copenhagen is an incredibly safe city in my opinion. I always felt safe walking at night with my friends and in my housing. Danes are also quite friendly in my opinion. I felt especially safe always on the public transport. |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I absolutely loved living in Denmark and all the people I got to meet. |
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I think I would have been able to live very well, but I was quite reckless with spending. If I really tried, I could have spent max $100 a week, but I probably spent much more than that. |
| Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $200 |
| Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I would advise future students to not spend so much on food and to try to only deposit a certain amount into your checkings from your savings account. I had pretty much all my money just in my checkings, so it felt like I had unlimited money when I really didn't. |
