Immersive learning and urban becomings February 07, 2022

DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I deeply appreciated the immersive component of our classes: we learned by doing and by being. It was by walking around neighborhoods, meeting with researchers, visiting museums, and carrying out field experiments that I was exposed to a wide range of conversations and concerns on economic/social/environmental sustainability, race, gender, etc. Through everyday living and intentional planning on behalf of the program's faculty, I felt supported and empowered to diversify my intellectual interests in a kind and vibrant learning environment.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Academic framework
  • Urban setting
* What could be improved?
  • More support for low-income students
  • Housing for students of color; more support for SoC in general
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had been more prepared for how homogenous the city was. It was a lot less racially and ethnically diverse than major cities tend to be. The majority of the students in the program were also white. The culture shock and isolation I experienced at the beginning of the semester might've been less distressing had I known that this was going to be a significant component of my adjustment to a different country.
