fantastic journey through a very cold country Past Review

DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Accepting spending a lot of time alone, working more loosely, learning how to live in a city. Yes it was worthwhile

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Brandeis barred me from living in an LLC because they wanted us to be exposed to Danish culture, but the Danes in my living situation did not appreciate our presence. I find it absolutely ridiculous that the university believes it has the right to choose where I can live during my abroad experience, when I am the one spending the money and having the experience.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I am now more interested in Latin American culture and would choose to immerse myself in a Latin American country instead.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don’t eat out that often! And pre-game before going out. Alcohol at grocery stores is super cheap but very very expensive at bars/clubs

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Culture
  • Nature
  • Copenhagen itself
* What could be improved?
  • Brandeis should allow people to live in any living situation DIS allows
  • Brandeis should not force students to take Danish, when the entire country speaks English
  • DIS should make a better effort to improve relations between American students and Danish locals in kollegiums
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Biking in the winter hurts
