DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I actually learned a lot about myself and my current motivations and goals.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I did learn a lot but really did not feel that the courses were rigorous or demanding.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Very helpful and friendly.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I absolutely loved staying in Nimbus Kollegium in Frederiksberg. It was a perfect mix of having my own space and independence, and learning about Danish culture through living with Danes.

* Food:

I cooked for myself and occasionally went out to eat, there were many grocery stores and restaurants easily accessible.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I lived with three Danes and took a Danish language and culture course.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

N/A but the Danish health care system is supposedly excellent.

* Safety:

Felt incredibly safe, even wandering around at night (though I would recommend staying with a buddy just in case). Many different kinds of transportation (bike, metro, bus) easily available at all hours.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I really loved everything about it.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I'm a thrifty spender but Copenhagen is a ridiculously expensive city.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Meal prep! Buy and cook in bulk for the week to save on money and time.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Don't be afraid to talk to the Danes around you- with whom you're living or others- because they usually are very generous and helpful in teaching Danish and enjoy doing so!
