DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Learning about different cultures and mindsets outside of the United States helped me to gain perspective of what it meant to be a student within my community. Being exposed to such a different environment not only helped me to view myself in an alternative and novel way but also appreciate the uniqueness of my home.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

DIS is unique in that local professors teach the classes but the students are from the United States. The professors had high but reasonable expectations for the students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was most helpful during the first couple of weeks, when we

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I applied to live in the Performing Arts Living and Learning Community, through which I experienced Copenhagen's underground Arts. As a living community, we attended dance, acapella, and other performance events. Though they were unconventional and often different from main-stream performances that most of us were accustomed to, they helped me to become a more open-minded and experience Copenhagen in a unique way! Our living community lived in an apartment located in the city's center within 5-minute walking distance from classes. I was satisfied with my assignment because it was clean, had a great location, and was close to a major transportation terminal.

* Food:

Students living in the Living and Learning Communities receive food stipends that can be spent in local grocery stores. I cooked for myself most days.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Since I chose to live in the Living and Learning Community, which is only open to DIS students, it was more challenging for me to meet locals compared to students who chose other housing options. I became more integrated into the local culture through the local church.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Because I heard it was difficult to buy over-the-counter medication in Denmark, I brought some from the States. I highly suggest future students do the same! I did not have any other serious health-related issues but the program clearly instructed us how to receive care if we needed it.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The most unique aspect of DIS is that the program allows its students to learn more about the culture of Denmark and Europe through its study tours. These program-supported study tours helped me to learn about the values of Danish and European people in a more guided and integrated manner.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Though Copenhagen is an expensive city, it was feasible to live on a student's budget. It was particularly expensive to eat in restaurants. I spent approximately $500-600 per month.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? There are many student discounts in cafes, theaters, and museums--always remember to ask for them. Also, while I was touring other EU cities, many attractions had discounted prices for EU residents.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

I enrolled in a beginner's Danish language course. It helped me to learn food items, order coffee, and have basic conversations.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I did not take any classes for the Danish language prior to this program.
How many hours per day did you use the language? 0

  • Local Professors
* What could be improved?
  • More interaction with locals
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I did not expect Denmark to be so different from the United States but I was surprised to learn about the perspectives that Danes have about education and quality of life. I also did not expect the study tours to be as informative and life-changing.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Holocaust and Genocide

Course Department:
Instructor: Torben Jørgensen
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This class was intriguing because we learned about the Holocaust from a perspective that somewhat challenged the narrative portrayed in American media and education. We also traveled to Hamburg, Germany to visit the Neuengamme concentration camp site. The professor who taught the class was a fantastic teacher and lecturer. He helped us to critically analyze and reconsider preconceived notions we had of the genocides.

Comments: This course was challenging but taught practical information related to medicine such as how to take a medical history, do a physical exam, and choose appropriate treatment methods. As a class, we also traveled around various countries to learn about the different health care systems in Europe.
Credit Transfer Issues: I did not have any issues transferring the credits from this course to my home institution.
