DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to live in a new place without a support network and met a lot of new and interesting people. The program was really interactive and we got to learn and travel a lot. It was really cool learning so much about the Scandinavian perspective from teachers and peers alike. I really, really enjoyed my Urban livability and Environmental Philosophy courses and highly recommend both of them.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Besides issues with housing, everything was great.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had to move out and my RA was very passive aggressive.

* Food:

We get a food stipend but it isn't enough to last the entire semester. Otherwise eating out is great but it is pretty expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I lived with Danes and was party of the Visiting Family program.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Easily accessible.

* Safety:

Never felt unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

It was a great program that really made sure you understood your surroundings and Danish culture/history. I got to meet a lot of locals through the program's visiting/host family network, "buddy" network, and kollegiums.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The cost of living in Copenhagen is pretty high.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About $200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If possible, cook at home more

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
How many hours per day did you use the language? 0

  • Traveling
  • Some of my teachers were great (only half, definitely check out each professor's biographies beforehand)
  • It was a really clean and safe environment
* What could be improved?
  • Housing process
  • More food stipend
  • More help getting set up with a bike and cell phone plan
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew there were a lot of means to get a bike. A lot of students sell their bikes and this is spread word of mouth or via Facebook.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
