DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
If you have the chance to go abroad, DO IT! I learned a lot about myself and what my previous experiences had prepared me for and what I wasn't prepared for. I think that there are probably a lot of things I've learned from this experience that I don't even realize yet.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The library was pretty small, but you do have access to the Copenhagen Royal Library (although you won't find quite as much in English as in an American university's library). DIS has subscriptions to the main databases like JSTOR, so that's good.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was in Socialt Kollegium. The building is kind of getting old, but there's a little gym in the basement which is cool and you can use the laundry as much as you want. Living with Danes is awesome. I also have my own room and bathroom, which is nice.

* Food:

I cooked for myself, but DIS gives you a stipend which lasted me up until the last week, which was great. When they feed you on study tours, the food is generally very good. Copenhagen is a very expensive city so eating out is pretty prohibitive. Don't be shocked to spend between 5 and 7 dollars on a cup of coffee.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Danes can be a bit reserved unless they're drunk, so if you're not so into the drinking culture, it can be a little hard to really make good friends. But everyone has a different experience. I made a few friends on my hall and I also had a visiting family, which was lovely.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I don't actually have experience of Danish healthcare, but we students do have full access to it as Danish residents.

* Safety:

Copenhagen is generally a very safe city. Obviously, like anywhere in the world you have to be careful, but I've gone home late by myself and felt pretty safe. There are almost always people out and about in the city center.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is very expensive. I didn't go shopping too much, but you can expect to spend a lot of money. You get a food stipend if you're not living with a host family (or else the family will buy you what you need). If you plan it right you can go to museums on the days they're free (usually sundays or wednesdays). But if you're into night life, it can get pretty expensive.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

I took Danish, but I rarely used it outside the classroom because our vocabulary was pretty limited and everyone here speaks English.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? None
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? If you really want to use it, you have to force yourself to. Danish is not easy, especially because pronunciation is difficult.

You went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you!

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Cross Cultural Communication

Course Department: Communication and Media studies
Instructor: Helle Rytkonen
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was the first year they had this class, so they were trying out different activities. But most of it was really successful. It helps that Helle (our professor) is an amazing educator and an amazing person. We went together for five days to Northern Ireland and we saw and learned so much. We also went to Sweden together, which was also pretty interesting, though that part of the program needed more fine-tuning. The class itself was not so hard, although Helle is a pretty hard grader. I actually kind of wish we had more readings because they were very interesting.

European Urban Design Theories

Course Department: Architecture and Design
Instructor: Henning Thomsen
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Amazing course. It's the kind of thing I would never have taken if I wasn't studying abroad. You really learn to notice things about cities that you hadn't noticed before, like how much space you have on a sidewalk or where a bus stop is placed. There was a lot of reading, but we did talk about the reading so you have to do it. His instructions for certain assignments were not so clear, which was annoying. He's a bit more of a designer than an educator, but he means well and there's still a lot to learn from him.
