DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that I do not want to go into architecture, but I do want to continue to pursue a career in the creative industry. This was important to know so that I didn't waste my years in grad school pursuing something that I did not want to do! I also learned a lot about Danish/Scandinavian culture. This was really eye-opening because it creates another level of understanding. Now that I am back in the States, I keep bumping into Danes/Copenhagen natives, and it's truly rewarding to be able to have a meaningful conversation with them.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The program was well-tailored to the specific disciplines offered. As a pre-architecture student, I appreciated the fact that I was exposed to real architects and their projects and resources.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

As a kollegium student, we were expected to cook/buy our own food. But it was nice of DIS to provide a $600 stipend. It really helped buffer the costs.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Copenhagen is an incredibly safe city! I was comfortable walking to the bus stop by myself in the late hours (after studio). People also keep to themselves more and are unlikely to bother you in the streets.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is a very expensive city. I found myself sharing groceries with my roommate in order to cut back on costs. Even then, the portions at the grocery stores are considerably smaller than those in the states.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? No

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
