The term and year this program took place: Fall 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Most of the teachers were great and the workload was fair. It's pretty much taught like an American University, as opposed to a Danish one (since almost all of the students are American. They also offer interesting, relevant classes (Danish language, Danish politics, etc.)

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I had no problems.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I got my own apartment in the Osterbro neighborhood.

My housing was amazing, but I got it on my own. I opted out of the program's housing .

* Food:

Denmark is very expensive, so I really had to cook every meal for myself in order to afford it. But the grocery stores have plenty of good, cheap things.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I wanted to play basketball, and they said I could, but then it fell through. But I was in a choir with DIS which was fun. There's a bunch of stuff you can get involved in.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

You get free health insurance through the Danish health system, which is wonderful.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? No idea, but I only spent like 600 bucks on food the whole time, because I'm cheap. Other people spent fortunes on food and drinks. Denmark is NOT CHEAP
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Basically, everything will cost twice what you think it should. It's expensive but worth it.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?

You can take a semester of Danish. But everybody there speaks English as well as you do.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't do DIS if you want to be in a whole "different world." But if you want to have opportunities to travel, and you want to live in one of the world's most beautiful, livable cities, do go to DIS. It's an excellent program.
