Fukuoka is the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture and sits on the northern shore of the island. It’s known for ancient temples, beaches and modern shopping malls, including Canal City. Maizuru Park contains ruins of 17th-century Fukuoka Castle. The central Hakata district contains Tocho-ji Temple, home to a wooden Buddha ten meters tall and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, with displays on daily life in the Meiji and Taisho eras. Fukuoka is known for its excellent public transportation system and the natural beauty of its scenic mountains and beaches.  Fukuoka is well-situated and connected as a transportation hub for those who want to also explore other country destinations in East and South East Asia.
