By (Music Performance Tuba, Truman State University) for

College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS): Salzburg - Salzburg College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Well I realized while here how much I liked the difference in how they play music and it has made me want to come back and study music here at some point.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everything was smooth and all the staff was knowledgeable. As a music major I wish there would have been more music classes offered that would do more for my major. The private lessons were amazing but that was basically all that counted towards my degree in the long run.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Where I stayed was a students dorm. It supplied you with all basic things i.e. sheets and basic cookware etc. In Austria there is never an unsafe feeling really. The dorm was also in a nice neighborhood and quite close to the city central. Everyone at the dorm was nice and friendly. I liked living there a lot.

* Food:

Food was excellent.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were so many cool things to do and someone was always willing to do them with you or show you extra things more known to the locals.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Salzburg is a very, very safe city. I never experienced any problems the entire time I was here.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I spoke German with most of the students I was living with. With that being said, most people in Austria speak English and like to practice it so it is a bit harder to always speak German.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would say the people who got the most out of the program were music majors and art majors. There is so much of both in or very close to Salzburg. Also Salzburg is basically in the middle and it makes it very easy to go to others countries.
