CISabroad (Center for International Studies): Dublin - Semester in Dublin

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Dublin was extremely multi-cultural so I was able to learn about so many different types of cultures from around the world and get a better understanding of cultural differences. It was 100% worthwhile.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

DCU offered a rather relaxed environment in terms of a university campus.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

John Hayes is the on-site advisor for Ireland and he is such a genuinely nice guy. He is extremely helpful with any questions you may have and makes a point to check on you throughout the semester. He's also a great tour guide!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed in Shanowen Square Student residences. The apartment had four bedrooms with private bathrooms and a shared living area/kitchen. The staff at Shanowen were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The Irish are super welcoming people and help you feel completely included in the social scene which helps to really understand their culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Dublin was a great place to stay and the CISabroad team did so much to make sure that we would truly enjoy our experience.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $125-$175
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Buy groceries with your roommates and split the costs. Definitely eat out and enjoy the local foods, but try to cook or eat in more than eating out.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • On-Site help - John is great!
  • Introduction to new cultures
  • Ability to cheaply travel across Europe
* What could be improved?
  • There's nothing I'd change.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would've known how cheap travel would be between countries, if you find the right sights - Ryanair has cheap flights across Europe - so that I could've planned more trips than I took, rather than spur of the moment bookings.
